Why is this day important?
Indian Air Force Day shows the strength and courage of our air warriors. It reminds us of their bravery and service. The IAF protects our skies and helps during disasters. It also supports peace missions in other countries.
The IAF started with just a few pilots and aircraft. Today, it is the fourth-largest air force in the world. It has modern jets, helicopters, and radar systems. It plays a key role in India’s defense.
History of the Indian Air Force
The Indian Air Force was formed on October 8, 1932. At first, it was called the Royal Indian Air Force. After independence in 1947, the word “Royal” was dropped. The IAF became a part of the Indian Armed Forces in 1950.
Since then, the IAF has fought in many wars. It took part in the wars with Pakistan in 1947, 1965, 1971, and 1999. It also helped in the 1962 war with China. The IAF played a big role in the Balakot airstrike in 2019.
How is Air Force Day celebrated?
Air Force Day is celebrated with a grand parade. Fighter jets fly in the sky. Helicopters and transport aircraft also take part. The parade shows India’s air power and technology.
In 2025, the parade included jets like Rafale, Sukhoi Su-30MKI, and MiG-29. Helicopters like Apache and Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) were also shown. The IAF displayed its Akash missile system and Rohini radar.
A special tribute was given to the MiG-21 Bison. This jet served the IAF for over 60 years. It was retired recently. The IAF also celebrated Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla’s mission to the International Space Station. He is the first IAF officer to go to space
Operation Sindoor – A key highlight

Humanitarian work by the IAF
The IAF also helps during natural disasters. It sends help during floods, earthquakes, and other emergencies. In 2025, the IAF helped in Uttarkashi, Punjab, and Myanmar. It rescued people and delivered food and medicines..
