8th Pay Commission

The Indian government has taken a big step for its employees. On Tuesday, October 28, 2025, the Union Cabinet approved the Terms of Reference (ToR) for the 8th Central Pay Commission. This is great news for over 50 lakh central government employees and 69 lakh pensioners

What Is the 8th Pay Commission?

The Pay Commission is a government body. It reviews and recommends changes in the salaries, pensions, and allowances of central government employees. These commissions are set up every 10 years. The 7th Pay Commission was implemented in 2016. Now, the 8th Pay Commission will bring the next round of changes.

What Happened on October 28?

On this day, the Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the ToR for the 8th Pay Commission . The ToR is a document that defines the scope, goals, and timeline of the commission. It tells the commission what to study and what to recommend.

Who Will Be in the Commission?

The 8th Pay Commission will have:

  • One Chairperson
  • One Part-Time Member
  • One Member-Secretary
  • According to reports, the chairperson will be former Supreme Court judge Ranjana Prakash Desai .

What Will the Commission Do?

The commission will:

  • Recommend changes in pensions and allowances

  • Submit interim reports if needed

The commission has been given 18 months to complete its work. That means the final report may come by mid-2027, but the government may act earlier.

When Will the New Pay Be Implemented?

The new pay structure is likely to be implemented from January 1, 2026 The New Indian Express. This is not confirmed yet, but it is the expected date. If approved, employees may also get arrears for the months before implementation.
